that she was called to be
to bring the people together.
She’ll go back into the city, gather the people and
end on the cliff’s edge by the water where life begins anew.

It really is true that life imitates art and art imitates life, it’s a cycle that seems to take a life of its own; creating a beautiful symbiosis.  

YA is not only an original musical release, but a project that has carried me along in the last few years of my life since it was conveived many moons ago. The conception took place in a music studio in LA with Tarin Bai, it blossomed in the Caribbean coast of Colombia: Palomino and Santa Marta with the exceptional Micheal Street as the director of photography and the culmination took place in Paris, France (where I now live) with David Poucet creating an immaculate edit and Vincent Fawaz of Kame House Color dancing with the color.

I have felt incredibly inspired to search deep within me, expand my musical horizons and explore my  homeland, Colombia, which I left at a young age and for 10 years I was an undocumented immigrant and couldn’t leave the country.  

“YA” has dance hall, cumbia rhythms and layered with authentic tropical indigenous instruments played beautifully by Gilbert. Aside from all the musical vibrations that soar deeply and powerfully through me I am also feeling a powerful sense of responsibility as a multilingual citizen of the world to infuse my art and music with a message of unity, strength and the life changing power of love.   YA has evolved into a protest song that has an electro tropical flavor, but the underlying message is for all of us as a people to rise up powerfully, to stay united and to love more ferociously.

That’s what I'm relaying in this song : the time has come for all of us to look within ourselves and make individual changes so that as a people we can move towards a fully sustainable system. My most pressing message for this project is to inject the urgency of unity in our current world. We are all going through some type of change and we can all identify with this notion that our world is changing at a rapid rate and uniting forces is the only solution.

FEMALE EMPOWERMENT

Leading to the egalitarian relationship between men and women: Expressing the power of the divine feminine, which both men and women carry within them. The costume pays homage to CHIA, the goddess of the Moon and BACHUE, the mother goddess in the culture of my colombian ancestors CHIBCHA where the most important deities are female.
My character also honors women warriors and goddesses such as CLEOPATRA, JOAN OF ARC and ISIS to showcase the power of women in society.

I worked very closely with Brionne Rowe, a young female designer in Los-Angeles.

Cooperation not competition

The dichotomy and relationship between worlds (nature vs. city) is highlighted throughout the video and eventually culminates with a symbolic element of our origin : water.
Without water we cannot live. We are currently in the process of losing the living elements of our planet. Like in nature, we need a system where everything works together.

The only way to make change is to come together as a people.
